The Flint Housing Union represents residents directly impacted by housing insecurity, unsafe living conditions, and displacement. Our work centers on organizing neighbors, advocating for accountability, and ensuring that housing in Flint serves the people who live here, not just those who profit from it.
Across our community, residents are increasingly aware of investors, both outside and inside, purchasing large numbers of homes. The concern is not simply who owns property, but how wealth is extracted from those homes, how they are managed, and how decisions affect neighborhood stability. Many residents report seeing homes bought, held vacant, or minimally renovated while rents and home prices rise beyond what local families can afford. This contributes to a growing sense that long-term residents are being priced out of their own communities.
A consistent issue we hear from residents is the lack of transparency and accountability in how housing policies and regulations are enforced. When existing protections are not applied or monitored effectively, it allows harmful practices to continue without consequence. This undermines trust and leaves residents feeling they have limited options to address unsafe or unaffordable housing conditions.
Flint does not lack housing units. What we face is a challenge of access, affordability, and stewardship. Housing is increasingly treated as a financial asset rather than a basic necessity, which has real consequences for public health, neighborhood stability, and long-term community wellbeing.
In response, the Flint Housing Union is focused on building collective power among residents. We educate tenants and homeowners about their rights, advocate for stronger enforcement of housing standards, and work toward policies that prioritize safe, stable, and truly affordable housing. We also support community-driven approaches to redevelopment that keep housing in the hands of people who live in and care for Flint. We believe that those most affected by housing decisions should have a meaningful role in shaping them. Our goal is to ensure that Flint remains a place where residents can safely live, invest in their neighborhoods, and build long-term stability.
